We know a lot of you metalheads are pretty big gamers and that's what makes Pentakill so unique. Most of the skins are now Legacy skins, some are still regular league of legends skins. It's great for an old rocker like myself to be a part of this modern gaming music world, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to work with such a great team of talented people.
Here, a ‘deathfire grasp' was one of the more powerful ways to blast your foes into neon smithereens and Pentakill isn't just the ultimate achievement of slaughtering five enemies in one go, but also the name of the in-game rock band made up of character ‘skins' made to look like face-melting Medieval metal musicians.
And to crank it up a notch, Mordekaiser, Sona, Karthus, Olaf, and Yorick are taking the stage with new splash art, in-game models, and an all new summoner icon. A green smoke suddenly formed and popped Karthus, the lead singer of the rock band. You can read more about the band and that album here , covering them was actually one of the very first articles that I ever wrote for Metal Insider.
In 2014, the Riot Games music label issued the band's first foray out of the video game realm, "Smite And Ignite" — an eight-track collection of appropriately punishing songs that was written completely in-house at Riot, and supported by the talents of studio musicians, including ZP Theart of DRAGONFORCE, Derek Sherinian of DREAM THEATER, Lohner and Lande.
I really liked it. I do like metal so obviously I would but i'm surprised Riot actually did something metal not like some hard rock passed off as metal thing. We were able to chat exclusively with Lande over email and he told us about the making of the new album and how his Karthus persona has undergone a recent upgrade.
Conceived by California-based gaming gurus Riot Games in 2014, Pentakill exist purely in the imaginations of their creators - and the 100 million global fans of League of Legends , the multiplayer online battle arena game that spawned the band's members, Karthus the Deathsinger, Yorick, Sona, Olaf and lead guitarist Mordekaiser the Master of Metal.
Pentakill has a brand new album out called Pentakill II: Grasp of the Undying on which Lande, as Karthus, sings five songs. Because debut album for Pentakill, the League of Legends-inspired band, has been released and is now available to download for free. Pentakill Olaf decided to take the image of an aggressive hard rock drummer, who is equally well equipped for both the battlefield and the drum set.
His classical mace was adapted to the axe-guitar which is a very clever turn of the Riot Games. It's a metal band whose music goes perfectly playing in the background as you rack up kills in the Summoner's Rift. Three years have passed since the release of their debut album, but the fictional band Pentakill is back with some very real heavy metal music.
Update July 22, 2017: We didn't have to wait very long before getting to hear some of this new League of Legends album, as two singles from it are now up on YouTube. Now, taking a page out of Blizzard's infamous Elite Tauren Chieftain , it looks like Pentakill is set to become its own real-world band, with the "Smite high elo and Ignite" album due out on June 3.
Although the bulk of the work was done by Riot Games' in-house composers and sound designers, the album also features collaborations with some of metal's most respected musicians - there are cameos from the likes of Tommy Lee , Nine Inch Nails alumnus Danny Lohner and Noora Louhimo, singer with the Finnish metal band Battle Beast.
Billed as the fictional land of Valoran's most famous rock band, the group is fronted by the demonic Karthus, joined by guitarist Mordekaiser, keyboardist Sona, bass player Yorick, drummer Olaf, and recently added golden warrior goddess Kayle on vocals.
